20/10/2010 was Troll Christmas

October 21, 2010

Today is the day after Facebook became 4chan (in South Africa, at least). As expected, there have been a few articles written about what went wrong on the Woolworths SA Facebook page, but no one has talked about the epic trolling that took place. Until now.

A quick background for those that missed the drama: Beeld newspaper reported that Woolworths was “banning” Christian magazines. A couple of other Christian organisations called for a boycott of Woolworths. The Woolworths Facebook page got stormed by a few Christian fundamentalists (and a few normal people). A few hours (and much epic trolling) later, Woolworths decides to put back the non-selling magazines on their shelves.

A quick background to trolling: Wikipedia doesn’t really explain it very well but Urban Dictionary has a good variety of descriptions:

“Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks on an innocent by-stander, because it’s the internet and, hey, you can.”

Trolls are always hungry. Do Not Feed!

There are many types of trolls and there are some horrible places on the internet where the really evil ones hang out. But, generally, most people onΒ  the internet just want to have fun. We do it for the lulz. πŸ™‚

So, in the spirit of fun.. here are a few highlights from yesterday’s troll christmas.

randoms…

damnation and nuns…

the end of days…

well, i got bored…

the end…
wooliesarepeople

*sigh* And so it ended. It had everything.. there were rick rolls, Hitler was mentioned, excessive capitalisation and bad spelling were mocked… and we met MichEAl… he was cute but dumb. Alas. A few brief memes emerged but, right now, I think people are just having fun with boycotting everything.

Thank you to everyone that participated. Shout if you want to be mentioned/referenced. I hid everyone’s identity as the posts are now deleted on the page and.. well.. this is outside of Facebook.

Remember to have fun out there on the interwebs. πŸ™‚

Ah chick, that really made me laugh out loud – what a hugely entertaining day that was!

What amuses me too is how it *doesn’t actually matter* what the issue is for these flare ups to happen – it could be blogger injustice, silly magazines, crime stories, celebs, fashion or anything, and the trolls will find a way to have their moment of glory.

That is one of the main reasons why I love the interwebz, giving so many crazies a soapbox so they can shout it (and then defend it).

    Too much of hilarity! πŸ˜€

Well, sometimes the issues *do* matter.. but when they’re argued so badly, it seems very pointless to try logic. So, it’s easier to result to go for the lulz. And what epic lulz were had. *happy sigh* πŸ˜‰

my favourite is still the chick who said that removing the magazines was a conspiracy against christian media … and that woolworths’ decision would ‘affect their bottom’.

    she wasn’t even a troll.

    lovely.

*chuckle* There were so many funnies throughout the day.

      “Where did the christians go?”
“They’re probably praying for us… it burns.. it burns!”

My vent seeing I didn’t get a chance to post it on facebook!
Shame! The world is really screwed up when so much energy is wasted on a few magazines and people are dying of hunger, disease, war & stuff and not much energy goes into that! Makes me sick in the stomach!

Anyhows, Ani post is funny & I particularly like the Niels, the rastafarian & Faure, the porn watcher – can you send me their surnames? #;-) LOL!
