Greenpopping

October 7, 2010

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”

We’ve all heard about climate change. There is so much information and misinformation out there about it that we often feel confused about what we can do. The thing is.. every little bit helps. Just do something!

Which is where Greenpop comes in… they’re starting a Treevolution!

Their project is very simple: plant trees in the most under-greened communities in Cape Town. They get donations from the public to buy the trees and get volunteers to help plant the trees. It’s an easy way to contribute to the greening of our city.

The thing that’s set them apart from the rest of the crowd is their marketing campaign. There are some great videos on youtube of their antics: a traffic hour flashmob on De Waal Drive. reverse graffiti of trees (actually cleaning the walls with water) and the Long Street park parking. I had the pleasure of briefly meeting them at the Pecha Kucha meeting last month and can confirm that they really are that motivated and passionate about trees.

Their next big event is for the 10/10/10 Global Party organised by 350.org (and 350Africa). It’s a day of global action, so feel free to find an event near you or join Greenpop on Sunday (RSVP on Facebook).

Happy greening!
